The White-Slave Traffic Act, better known as the Mann Act, is a United States law, passed June 25, 1910 (ch. 395, 36 Stat. 825;codified as amended at 18 U.S.C. §§ 24212424). It is named after Congressman James Robert Mann, and in its original form prohibited white slavery and the interstate transport of females for "immoral purposes". Its primary stated intent was to addressprostitution, "immorality", and human trafficking; however, its ambiguous language of "immorality" allowed selective prosecutions for many years, and was used to criminalize forms of consensual sexual behavior.[1] It was later amended by Congress in 1978, and again in 1986 to apply only to transport for the purpose of prostitution or illegal sexual acts.

Career Details

Charles F. (Charlie) McMillan (Age -57), former principal associate director for Weapons Programs , was appointed the 10th director of Los Alamos National Laboratory on June 1, 2011.McMillan joined LANL in 2006 from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where he served in a variety of research and management positions. Prior to being named LANL's principal associate director for Weapons Programs in 2009, McMillan led the Lab's Weapons Physics organization.Charles McMillan, 56, succeeded physicist Michael Anastasio (Born 1948), who had been lab boss since 2006. Established in 1943, Los Alamos now has an annual budget of about $2bn and employs nearly 10 000 staff.
With a PhD in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, McMillan began his career in 1983 as an experimental physicist at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in California. He later moved into computational science and management at the LLNL before joining Los Alamos in 2006 as principal associate director for its weapons programmes. That role involved him overseeing the safety, reliability and performance of the US nuclear deterrent, which is the lab's main mission.Holds bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and physics from Columbia Union College.
McMillan has nearly 30 years of scientific and management experience in weapons science and stockpile certification, hands-on experience in both experimental physics and computational science, and demonstrated success at balancing mission performance with security and safety.
McMillan led the Laboratory’s weapons physics organization from 2006 to 2011. Before joining Los Alamos, McMillan served in a variety of research and management positions at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California.
Has been awarded two Department of Energy Awards of Excellence. Married, with three college-age children. Avid photographer and accomplished musician, playing piano, organ, and recorder. Continues to perform in a baroque chamber music ensemble.

Famous Quotes

"I have great optimism for the future," said McMillan. "This is a complicated time but also a time of great opportunity for the program, an opportunity to work with the Administration to shape tomorrow’s nuclear security complex while effectively managing the nuclear stockpile along the way. The service we provide to the nation is as important now as it ever was."
Summing up his philosophy on how science is best managed, McMillan quoted from the collection of Lewis Thomas essays, Lives of a Cell: "What [research] needs is for the air to be made right. If you want a bee to make honey, you do not issue protocols on solar navigation or carbohydrate chemistry, you put him together with other bees . . . and you do what you can to arrange the general environment around the hive. If the air is right, the science will come in its own season, like pure honey."
McMillan also serves as President and CEO of Los Alamos National Security, LLC, the Laboratory’s managing and operating contractor.[4]

About Los Alamos

Los Alamos is one of three US nuclear-weapons labs – the other two being the LLNL and Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico. McMillan's responsibilities as head of Los Alamos will, however, go beyond developing and maintaining nuclear weapons. The lab also operates a national high-magnetic-field laboratory and works with other institutions including the Joint Genome Institute, which tackles genome mapping, DNA sequencing and related information science. Los Alamos also runs a research programme in systems-biology modelling. "The lab is helping prevent pandemics, detecting and disabling improvised explosive devices, and developing alternative energy sources," McMillan told physicsworld.com. "Today it leads research breakthroughs in areas as diverse as contributing to a possible AIDS vaccine and to fuel cell energy storage developments that could cut costs and speed commercialization. One of my goals is to build on these strengths to enhance the lab for the future."

Career

General Vij was born on January 3, 1943 [3] at Jammu. He completed his studies at the SRML Higher Secondary School, Jammu and joined the National Defence Academy (NDA) in 1959. He was commissioned into the Dogra Regiment on 11 December 1962. Within weeks of his commissioning, he saw action in the Walong sector in the 1962 Indo-China War. Since then he has served in the eastern sector six times, the last time being as the General Officer Commanding of the IV Corps. Vij has served as the General Staff Officer of an Infantry Division, a Director in the Military Operations Directorate as a Colonel and Deputy Director General of Perspective Planning (Strategic Planning) as a Brigadier at Army HQ in New Delhi.[2][4]
Vij served as the Major General, General Staff at the Western Command in Chandimandir, Chandigarh (Punjab) and during the 1999Kargil War, he served as the Director General Military Operations (DGMO). During this time he was criticized for appearing, in his professional capacity before a group of senior BJP leaders, and briefing them. In 1999, he broke the military tradition to brief members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on operations in Kargil.[5] when he was Director General of Military Operations.[6] For his services as the DGMO, he was awarded the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal. He was involved was the planning and execution of Operation Khukri - to extricate trapped Indian peacekeeping troops in Sierra Leone. The formations he has commanded include a mountain brigade involved in active counter-insurgency operations in the north east, an elite RAPID (Reorganised Army Plains Infantry Division) unit, the 1 Strike Corps based at Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh and the IV Corps based at Tezpur, Assam. He is also a recipient of the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM). On 1 October 2000, Vij was appointed as the GOC of Southern Command at Pune and led the Army's rescue efforts during the 2001 Gujarat earthquake. In October 2001, he was appointed as the Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS) at New Delhi and in January 2002, he was appointed as the 10th Colonel of the Dogra Regiment and the Dogra Scouts. He was appointed as the Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC) on 1 January 2005. He is married to Rita Vij and they have a son, Nalin, who is a software engineer in the United States.[2] General Vij retired on 31 January 2005, after completing more than 42 years service.

Post Retirement

As of 2010, he is the Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority, with an equivalent rank of a Union Minister of State.[7]

Recent controversy

Builders by name Adarsh Housing Cooperative Society have been constructing buildings in the prime government land in Mumbai. The permission for construction on this government land has been taken in name of providing the affordable accommodation to war widows and the land had been reserved for this purpose. However, many politicians, top military officials, other bureaucrats and their relatives have taken the ownership of the flats. [8] Ashok Chavan, current chief minister of Maharashtra, resigned under pressure for his role in this scam. CBI is probing the scam. Gen N C Vij along with two other former military chiefs - Gen Deepak Kapoor, and Admiral Madhvendra Singh have offered to give up their apartments.[9]

Controversies

Sukna land scam

General Deepak Kapoor toned down the action against one his key aides, Lieutenant-GeneralAvadesh Prakash who is one of the seniormost officers of the Army, against the recommendations of the Eastern Army Commander who had ordered the probe.[5] After an outcry over the perceived “letting off” of a senior officer in the case, who incidentally retired. Antony intervened and directed the Army Chief to order a court martial to bring out the facts of the case.[6][7]Avadhesh Prakash was found guilty and dismissed by Army court on 3 December 2011. [8]

In October 2010, it was alleged that Kapoor fraudulently acquired a flat in the now infamous Adarsh Housing Society in ColabaMumbai, which was built fraudulently on the land under "de-facto" possession of the army, for the intended purpose of the welfare of Kargil heroes and their widows. This news brought a lot of adverse publicity to the Indian Army and dented its image. After this news was brought to public, Kapoor claimed that he cancelled his allotment for the flat.[9]

Personal life

General Kapoor holds Master's Degrees in Political Science, Military Science and Business Administration, the latter which he completed at the Indira Gandhi National Open University in New Delhi. He also holds a diploma in Business Management. He is married to Mrs. Kirti Kapoor and they have two children - a daughter and a son, both of whom are married.

The Nepalese royal massacre occurred on 1 June 2001, at a house in the grounds of theNarayanhity Royal Palace, then the residence of the Nepalese monarchy. The government declared that the heir to the throne, Prince Dipendra, killed nine members of his family and himself. However, the majority of citizens in Nepal condemned and disapproved the press conference issued, which referred to the Late King Dipendra as a mass murderer. The dead included King Birendra of Nepal and Queen Aiswarya. Prince Dipendra became de jure King of Nepal upon his father's death and died whilst in a coma three days after the act. There are claims that Dipendra was already dead before being declared as the King. Gyanendra became king after the massacre.

[edit]Events of Historic Importance during Tenure

Three important events occurred during the tenure of General Sundararajan Padmanabhan which changed the course of world history in terrorism .The first was the Nepalese royal massacre which occurred on 1 June 2001, at a house in the grounds of the Narayanhity Royal Palace, then the residence of the Nepalese monarchy. The government declared that the heir to the throne, Prince Dipendra, killed nine members of his family and himself.
The second were the September 11 attacks which were a series of four coordinated suicide attacks upon the United States in New York City and the Washington, D.C. areas on September 11, 2001. On that Tuesday morning, 19 terrorists from the Islamist militant group al-Qaeda hijacked four passenger jets. The hijackers intentionally flew two of those planes, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, into the North and South towers of the World Trade Center complex in New York City; both towers collapsed within two hours. The hijackers also intentionally crashed American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and intended to pilot the fourth hijacked jet, United Airlines Flight 93, into the United States Capitol Buildingin Washington, D.C.; however, the plane crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after its passengers attempted to take control of the jet from the hijackers. Nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks, including all 227 civilians and 19 hijackers aboard the four planes.
The third was the 2001 Indian Parliament attack which was a high-profile attack by Lashkar-e-Toiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed against the building housing the Parliament of India in New Delhi. The attack led to the death of a dozen people, including one civilian. On 13 December 2001, five gunmen infiltrated the Parliament House in a car with Home Ministry and Parliament. While both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha had been adjourned 40 minutes prior to the incident, many Members of Parliament (MPs) and government officials such as Home Minister LK Advani and Minister of State for Defence Harin Pathak were believed to have still been in the building at the time of the attack.(Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Opposition Leader Sonia Gandhi had already left). The gunmen drove their vehicle into the car of the Indian Vice President Krishan Kant (who was in the building at the time), got out, and began firing their weapons. The Vice President's guards and security personnel shot back at the terrorists and then started closing the gates of the compound. The lady constable Kamlesh Kumari was first to spot the terrorist squad. One gunman, wearing a suicide vest, was shot dead; the vest exploded. The other four gunmen were also killed. Five policemen, a Parliament security guard, and a gardener were killed, and 18 others were injured. No minister or any MP was hurt.

---- Japan Airlines Flight 471 was a Japan Airlines flight from Don Mueang International Airport in Bangkok, Thailand to Palam International Airport (now Indira Gandhi International Airport) in New Delhi, India. On June 14, 1972 the Douglas DC-8-53 used crashed outside of the New Delhi airport, killing 82 of 87 occupants; 10 of 11 crew members and 72 of 76 passengers died, and 3 people on the ground died.[1] 16 of the dead were Americans.[2] Brazilian actress Leila Diniz was also among the killed.

McMillan also serves as President and CEO of Los Alamos National Security, LLC, the Laboratory’s managing and operating contractor ..

History

Welcome Address presented to Mahatma Gandhi by the Andipatti villagers
On February 9, 1934, Mahatma Gandhi visited Andipatti, arriving by train at 5:30 PM from Theni.[1] At the Andipatti Railway Station, the villagers of Andipatti received him, along with a large crowd from the neighbouring villages. A wooden table was placed on the platform of the Andipatti Station and Gandhi used it as a dais to address the gathering.[2] a Welcome Address in Tamil printed on khadi cloth and wooden-framed was read out by Mr. P.C. Rajan and handed over to Gandhi, who was delighted to see it printed on his favourite khadi cloth. He wished to carry it with him on his tour, but realised that he could not carry it all through his journey. Hence with the permission of the villagers, he decided to auction the memento and use the fund for welfare scheme. P.C. Rajan was the successful bidder and he collected the souvenir from the hands of Gandhi. The piece was later on donated by Mr. Rajan to the authorities of the Gandhi Museum in Madurai in the 1960s.

Jayalalithaa Jayaram (born 24 February 1948, and commonly referred to as J. Jayalalitha), is the Chief Minister of the state of Tamil Nadu, India. She was a popular film star in Indian cinema before her entry into politics, having appeared in many Tamil andTelugu films, as well as produced in Hindi and Kannada. She is the incumbent general secretary of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). She is called Amma('Mother') and Puratchi Thalaivi ('Revolutionary Leader') by her followers

Although there have been claims that Ramachandran, who had been Chief Minister for the state since 1977, was instrumental in introducing Jayalalithaa to politics, she has denied this.[1][7] In 1982, she joined the AIADMK, which had been founded by Ramachandran.[8] Her maiden public speech Pennin Perumai (the Pride of Women) was delivered at the political conference of the AIADMK that year.[9][10] In 1983, she became Propaganda Secretary for the party and was also selected as AIADMK candidate in the by-election for the Tiruchendur Assembly constituency.[8]
Ramachandran wanted her to be a member of the Rajya Sabha because of her fluency in English.[11] She was nominated and elected to that body as a Member of Parliament in 1984[clarification needed] and retained her seat until 1989.

The Orlov diamond 189.62 carats (37.924 g), is a large diamond that is part of the collection of the Diamond Fund of the Moscow Kremlin. The origin of this resplendent relic – described as having the shape and proportions of half a hen's egg. This diamond and a similar gem served as the eyes of the deity in the temple. Legends hold that a French soldier who had deserted during the Carnatic wars in Srirangam[29] disguised himself as a Hindu convert and stole it during 1747.

Vaikunta Ekadeshi

Devotees during Vaikunta Ekadesi
Pagal Pathu(10 day time) and Ra Pathu(10 day night time) festival is celebrated in the month ofMargazhi(December–January) for twenty days. The first ten days are referred as Ra-Pathu (10 day night festival) and the second half as Pagal Pathu(10 day day-time festival). The first day ofPagal pathu is Vaikunta Ekadashi.[33] The eleventh day of each fortnight in Tamil calendar is called ekadesi and the holiest of all ekadesis as per vaishnavite tradition is the Vaikunta EkadashiNammazhwar, one of the 12 azhwars, is believed to have ascended to vaikuntam(the heavenly abode of Vishnu) on this day. The devotion of the ninth-century poet, Nammazhwar, and his perceived ascent to heaven are enacted annually. During the festival, through song and dance, this place is affirmed to be Bhoologa Vaikunta(heaven on earth).[32] Araiyar Sevai is a divine colloquim of araiyars, who recite and enact Nalayara Divya Prabanda, the 4000 verses ofazhwars (Vaishnavite poets of the 7th–10th century).[34][35] Araiyars are born to Araiyar tradition most prevalent in Sri Vaishnava families in Srirangam, Alwar Thirunagari and Srivilliputhur.[34]The tradition of Araiyar Sevai was started by Nathamuni, a 10th century vaishanvite who compiled the works of azhwars.[35] It is believed as per Hindu mythology that 33 crores of gods come down to witness the event.[36][37] The festival deity is brought to the 1000-pillared hall on the morning of Vaikunta Ekadashi through the Paramapada Vasal (gate to paradise).[38] Lakhs of pilgrims rush to enter it after the gate is opened and the deity passes through it as it is believed that one who enters here will reach vaikuntam (heaven) after death.[39][40] The gate is open only during the ten days of Pagal Pathu (10 day day-time festival). On the last day of the festival, the poet Nammazhwar is said to be given salvation. The performance is enacted by priests and images in the temple depicts Nammazhwar as reaching heaven and getting liberation from the cycle of life and death. At that point, a member from the crowd of devotees, who are witnessing this passion play, goes up to the centre stage and requests Vishnu to return Nammazhwar to humanity, so that his words and form in the temple will continue to inspire and save the devotees. Following this performance of the salvation of Nammazhwar, the cantors are taken in procession round the temple.

entacapone - oral, Comtan

GENERIC NAME: ENTACAPONE - ORAL (en-TACK-up-own)

BRAND NAME(S): Comtan

USES: This medication is used with other medications (levodopa/carbidopa) to treat Parkinson's disease. Entacapone belongs to a class of drugs known as COMT inhibitors. Many people taking levodopa for Parkinson's have problems with the effects of the levodopa wearing off between scheduled doses, causing symptoms to return or worsen. Entacapone blocks a certain natural substance (COMT enzyme) that breaks down the levodopa in the body. This effect allows the levodopa to last longer in the system so that it doesn't wear off before the next dose.
HOW TO USE: Take this medication by mouth with or without food, usually with each prescribed dose of levodopa/carbidopa (up to 8 times daily) or as directed by your doctor.Dosage is based on your medical condition, liverfunction, and response to therapy.Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same times each day. Do not suddenly stop taking this medication unless instructed to do so by your doctor. Doing so may cause your Parkinson's symptoms to become much worse.Tell your doctor if your condition persists or worsens (such as your Parkinson's symptoms are not controlled).
SIDE EFFECTS: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, unwanted/uncontrolled movements, increased sweating, drowsiness, tiredness, dry mouth, gas, andabdominal pain may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.Lightheadedness or dizziness upon standing may also occur, especially during the first few weeks of treatment. To reduce the risk of dizziness and lightheadedness, get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position.Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication may develop serious side effects, but with frequent visits to your doctor, this risk can be minimized.Your urine may turn brownish-orange. This effect is harmless.Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: mental/mood changes (such as confusion, hallucinations), unusual urges (such as increased gambling, sexual urges),fever, muscle stiffness, persistent diarrhea.Tell your doctor immediately if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: easy bleeding/bruising, sore/painful muscles, muscle weakness, trouble breathing, pain with breathing.A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rashitching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing. This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. In the US -Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.In Canada - Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to Health Canada at 1-866-234-2345.
However, after over twenty-five years on the papal throne, two assassination attempts (one of which resulted in severe physical injury to the Pope), and a number of cancer scares, John Paul's physical health declined. In 2001 he was diagnosed as suffering from Parkinson's disease.[160] International observers had suspected this for some time but it was only publicly acknowledged by the Vatican in 2003. Despite difficulty speaking more than a few sentences at a time, trouble hearing and severe osteoarthrosis, he continued to tour the world, although rarely walking in public.
The Polaris missile was a two-stage solid-fuel nuclear-armed submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) built during the Cold War by Lockheed Corporation of California for the United States Navy.
It was designed to be used as part of the Navy's contribution to the United States arsenal of nuclear weapons, replacing the Regulus cruise missile. Known as a Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM), the Polaris was first launched from the Cape Canaveral, Florida, missile test base on January 7, 1960.
Following the Polaris Sales Agreement in 1963, Polaris missiles were also carried on British Royal Navy submarines between 1968 and the mid-1990s.
Plans to equip the Italian Navy with the missile ended in the mid-60s, after several successful test launches carried out on board the Italian cruiser Giuseppe Garibaldi. Despite the successful launching tests, the US never provided the missiles, due to political convenience. Instead the Italian Government set to develop an indigenous missile, called Alfa, with a successful program, officially halted by Italian Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treatyratification and failure of the NATO Multilateral Force.
The Polaris missile was gradually replaced in the US Navy by the Poseidonmissile, beginning in 1972. During the 1980s, these missiles were replaced on the ten newest missile submarines by the Trident I missile.

The Nagasaki Shipping List and Advertiser, which was founded in 1861 by the Englishman A.W. Hansard, not only constituted the first English language newspaper in Japan, but was the first modern newspaper of any language in the country. On June 22 Hansard published the debut issue of his newspaper, which came out twice weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays, at a price of $20 per year. He published only twenty-eight issues of it (the final one October 1) out of his offices at No. 31 Oura, before moving to Yokohama, where he established the Japan Herald in late November.

Basic to this was the Military co-operation pact signed by America with Pakistan in 1954. The diffusing of this heinous plot cost Jawaharlal Nehruji and Kennedyji their lives. That is why the date 21-6-1954 is written on Nehruji’s Samadhi at Shantivan and not his actual date of death -27-5-1964 ,which was a medical murder. My grandfather Shri Nathu Shah Dhodyji also died in 1954.Also that the present Maruti Zen in my house which I bought from my Beauty parlor money and SBI bank loan has a number given in Chattisgarh.
