INTERNATIONAL WEAKNESSES OF THE PREMIER INSTITUTION OF INVESTIGATION TO TACKLE INTERNATIONAL TERROR OF THE PALESTINE LIBERATION ORGANIZATION AFFILIATED TO BANGLADESH AND ITS ILLEGAL JEHADI IMMIGRANTS ,SHARING THE SAME FLAG COLORS.

Purpose of the Interpol
Under Article 2 of the Organization’s Constitution, Interpol’s aims are:

"(a) To ensure and promote the widest possible mutual assistance between all criminal police authorities, within the limits of the laws existing in the different countries and in the spirit of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

b) To establish and develop all institutions likely to contribute effectively to the prevention and suppression of ordinary law crimes."

The limits of its operation are laid down in Article 3:

"It is strictly forbidden for the Organization to undertake any intervention or activities of a political, military, religious or racial character."

According to the interpretation given to Article 3, a political offence is one which is considered to be of a predominantly political nature because of the surrounding circumstances and underlying motives, even if the offence itself is covered by the ordinary criminal law in the country in which it was committed. This interpretation, based on the predominant aspects of the offence, is embodied in a resolution adopted by Interpol’s General Assembly in 1951.

In addition, a resolution adopted in 1984 states that, in general, offences are not considered to be political when they are committed outside a "conflict area" and when the victims are not connected with the aims or objectives pursued by the offenders.

During the 1971 war for Bangladesh’s liberation, the CHT population backed the Mukti Bahini against the Pakistani army. The following year, Manobendra Larma, who had been elected to the national parliament from the Hill Tracts, called on Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with a delegation, seeking to place Chakma concerns on the new nation’s political agenda. As it became clear that Shiekh Mujibur and the new establishment he represented was in no mood to listen, Mr Larma set up the Jana Sanghata Samiti as a political group, and later, its armed wing, the Shanti Bahini.

Uphaar cinema fire, one of the worst fire tragedies in recent Indian history[1], occurred on Friday, June 13, 1997 at Uphaar Cinema, Green Park, Delhi, during the premiere screening of ‘Border’, a patriotic Hindi movie. 59 people died and 103 were seriously injured in the subsequent stampede; most of the victims were trapped on the balcony and were asphyxiated as they tried to reach dimly marked exits to escape the smoke and fire.[2], and found the doors locked [3]

The fire broke out at 1710 hours, after the transformer at the parking level burst, and 20 cars in the parking lot caught fire, eventually leading to a large scale fire in the five-storey building which housed the cinema hall and several offices.

Resurrection On Film

A film based on the story of the Resurrection will be privately screened for Pope Benedict XVI on Sunday, April 1.

The movie will be shown on Italian state television on April 2-3.

The film The Investigation relates the story of the disappearance of Christ's body, from the perspective of a Roman official who is summoned to investigate events there.

The official, Tito Valerio Tauro, is given a secret mission by the Emperor Tiberius: to discover the truth behind the claims that a poor Jewish teacher rose from the dead after having been executed.

The film, produced by Rai Uno, was previewed last Friday at a Roman residence of the Opus Dei lay movement, and received with great enthusiasm.

It is scheduled to debut in theaters in Spain on April 4, and later in 500 theaters in the US, where it is being distributed by Fox.

Archbishop of Canterbury says churches must be 'safe' for gays

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, has said that the churches of the Anglican Communion must be safe places for gay and lesbian people.

His comments come in a welcome to an interim report on the Anglican Communion's Listening Process, a commitment to listen to the experience of homosexual people.

Williams warns that the challenge to create the safe space for their voices to be heard and for their dignity to be respected is based on a fundamental commitment of the Communion.

"The commitments of the Communion are not only to certain theological positions on the question of sexual ethics but also to a manifest and credible respect for the proper liberties of homosexual people, a commitment again set out in successive Lambeth Conference Resolutions over many decades" he said.

In what will be seen as a reference to the situation in Nigeria where Anglican Archbishop Akinola is backing legal measures which would oppress gay and lesbian people, Rowan Williams said; "I share the concerns expressed about situations where the Church is seen to be underwriting social or legal attitudes which threaten these proper liberties. It is impossible to read this report without being aware that in many places - including Western countries with supposedly 'liberal' attitudes - hate crimes against homosexual people have increased in recent years and have taken horrifying and disturbing forms.

"No-one reading this report can be complacent about such a situation, and the Church is challenged to show that it is truly a safe place for people to be honest and where they may be confident that they will have their human dignity respected, whatever serious disagreements about ethics may remain. It is good to know that the pastoral care of homosexual people is affirmed clearly by so many provinces."

In his statement, Archbishop Williams paid tribute to the work of Canon Phil Groves and the team at the Anglican Communion Office involved in coordinating the Listening Process.

The interim report, comprising summaries of the Communion's 38 Provinces' progress on the issue, can be found at: http://www.aco.org/listening/reports/

Why Did New Pope Called Himself Benedict XVI?

OF THE 265 popes, nine chose the name Benedict (‘Blessed’) in the first millennium, and six in the second.

Christian names are given in the covenant hope that children will live up to them. Names are also significant in the realm of the occult.

People take them to live up to the name’s associations. The modern Babylon, built on Rome’s seven hills, is “the hold of every foul spirit”.

Here the Chilean Cardinal, Dean Jorge Arturo Medina Estivez, will have secretly asked the new pope: “Do you accept your canonical election as Supreme Pontiff? Ratzinger would next have been asked, “By what name do you wish to be called?”

Ratzinger would then go to “The Room of Tears” to lament on the gravity of his responsibilities as Benedict.

The first thing the waiting world is told is the new Pope’s name:

“I announce to you a great joy. We have a Pope. The most eminent and reverend Lord, the Lord Cardinal Ratzinger, Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church, who takes to himself the name Benedict.”

Ratzinger will have taken that name for a reason.

SIGNIFICANCE OF NUMBERS 15 AND 28 FOR INDIA AND THE REPUBLIC DAY.

1.Army Day is celebrated on January 15 every year in India, in recognition of Lieutenant General (later Field Marshal) K. M. Cariappa's becoming the first Indian Commander-in-Chief in 1948. The day is celebrated in the form of parades and other military shows. Cariappa settled down amidst greenery and nature, in his house 'Roshanara' at Madikeri in Kodagu, after his retirement from public service. He loved the environment and the flora and fauna around him. He spent a lot of his leisure time educating people about cleanliness, pollution control and other essential issues.

On 15 May 1993, Field Marshal Cariappa died in Bangalore at an age of 94.

2. Ayodhya debate

The Ayodhya debate is a political, historical and socio-religious debate that was prevalent especially in the 1990s in South Asia. References such as the 1986 edition of theEncyclopædia Britannica reported that "Rama’s birthplace is marked by a mosque, erected by the Moghul emperor Babar in 1528 on the site of an earlier temple".[2] According to the Hindu view, the ancient temple could have been destroyed on the orders of Mughal emperor Babur.

(Court verdict by Col. F.E.A. Chamier, District Judge, Faizabad (1886). On 18th March 1886 the Faizabad District Judge passed an order in which he wrote: "I visited the land in dispute yesterday in the presence of all parties. I found that the Masjid built by Emperor Babar stands on the border of Ayodhya, that is to say, to the west and south. It is clear of habitants. It is most unfortunate that a Masjid should have been built on land specially held sacred by the Hindus, but as that event occurred 356 years ago, it is too late now to agree with the grievances." (Court verdict by Col. F.E.A. Chamier, District Judge, Faizabad (1886))

The situation regarding the Ram Janmabhoomi has been compared to the Temple Mount controversies and claims in Israel by the Middle East scholar and Islam critic Daniel Pipes [2]. In particular, Pipes writes:

"Ayodhya prompts several thoughts relating to the Temple Mount. It shows that the Temple Mount dispute is far from unique. Moslems have habitually asserted the supremacy of Islam through architecture, building on top of the monuments of other faiths (as in Jerusalem and Ayodhya) or appropriating them (e.g. the Ka'ba in Mecca and the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople)."

The Hindu Nationalist movement has been pressing for reclaiming three of its most holy sites which had been suffered sacrilege at the hands of Islam - at Ayodhya, Mathura and Varanasi. L K Advani, the leader of the BJP in his memoirs argues "If Muslims are entitled to an Islamic atmosphere in Mecca, and if Christians are entitled to a Christian atmosphere in the Vatican, why is it wrong for the Hindus to expect a Hindu atmosphere in Ayodhya.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882)

Sudden Light

I HAVE been here before,
But when or how I cannot tell:
I know the grass beyond the door,
The sweet keen smell,
The sighing sound, the lights around the shore.

You have been mine before,—
How long ago I may not know:
But just when at that swallow's soar
Your neck turned so,
Some veil did fall,—I knew it all of yore.
Then, now,—perchance again! . . . .
O round mine eyes your tresses shake!
Shall we not lie as we have lain
Thus for Love's sake,
And sleep, and wake, yet never break the chain?

BRAHMA

by: Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)

iF the red slayer think he slays,
Or if the slain think he is slain,
They know not well the subtle ways
I keep, and pass, and turn again.

Far or forgot to me is near;
Shadow and sunlight are the same;
The vanish'd gods to me appear;
And one to me are shame and fame.

They reckon ill who leave me out;
When me they fly, I am the wings;
I am the doubter and the doubt,
And I the hymn the Brahmin sings.

The strong gods pine for my abode,
And pine in vain the sacred Seven;
But thou, meek lover of the good!
Find me, and turn thy back on heaven.

"Brahma" is reprinted from Yale Book of American Verse. Ed. Thomas R. Lounsbury. New Haven: Yale University Press, 1912.

Hume proposed to develop fuelwood plantations "in every village in the drier portions of the country" and thereby provide a substitute heating and cooking fuel so that manure could be returned to the land. Such plantations, he wrote, were "a thing that is entirely in accord with the traditions of the country-a thing that the people would understand, appreciate, and, with a little judicious pressure, cooperate in."

He also took note of rural indebtedness, chiefly caused by the use of land as security, a practice the British themselves had introduced. Hume denounced it as another of "the cruel blunders into which our narrow-minded, though wholly benevolent, desire to reproduce England in India has led us." Hume also wanted government-run banks, at least until cooperative banks could be established.[3]

Smita Patil (Marathi: स्मिता पाटील) (October 17, 1955 – 13 December 1986) was a leading Indian actress from the 1970s to the 1980s in both Hindi and Marathi cinema.
Smita was the daughter of a Maharashtrian politician Shivajirao Patil & social worker mother from Shirpur town of Khandesh province of Maharashtra State.Smita died as a result of childbirth complications on December 13, 1986, barely 6 hours after having given birth to her son, Prateek Smit Babbar - so named in an extensively televised appearance by her grieving widower, Raj Babbar, whose tearful but long performance in front of the news cameras was seen as unnatural & contrived by most Indians.Prateek made his debut in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na playing Genelia's Brother.

Barack Hussein Obama II (pronounced /bəˈrɑːk hʊˈseɪn oʊˈbɑːmə/; born August 4, 1961) is the President-elect of the United States of America, and the first African American to be elected President of the United States. Obama was the junior United States Senator from Illinois from January 3, 2005, until his resignation on November 16, 2008, following his election to the presidency. His term of office as the forty-fourth U.S. president will begin on January 20, 2009.Obama served for twelve years as a professor at the University of Chicago Law School, teaching constitutional law. He was first classified as a Lecturer from 1992 to 1996, and then as a Senior Lecturer from 1996 to 2004.[37] He also joined Davis, Miner, Barnhill & Galland, a twelve-attorney law firm specializing in civil rights litigation and neighborhood economic development, where he was an associate for three years from 1993 to 1996, then of counsel from 1996 to 2004, with his law license becoming inactive in 2002.in 2007, Obama sponsored an amendment to the Defense Authorization Act adding safeguards for personality disorder military discharges.[85] This amendment passed the full Senate in the spring of 2008.[86] He sponsored the Iran Sanctions Enabling Act supporting divestment of state pension funds from Iran's oil and gas industry, which has not passed committee, and co-sponsored legislation to reduce risks of nuclear terrorism.[87][88] Obama also sponsored a Senate amendment to the State Children's Health Insurance Program providing one year of job protection for family members caring for soldiers with combat-related injuries.[89]In November 2006, Obama called for a "phased redeployment of U.S. troops from Iraq" and an opening of diplomatic dialogue with Syria and Iran.[141] In a March 2007 speech to AIPAC, a pro-Israel lobby, he said that the primary way to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons is through talks and diplomacy, although he did not rule out military action.[142] Obama has indicated that he would engage in "direct presidential diplomacy" with Iran without preconditions.[143][144][145] Detailing his strategy for fighting global terrorism in August 2007, Obama said "it was a terrible mistake to fail to act" against a 2005 meeting of al-Qaeda leaders that U.S. intelligence had confirmed to be taking place in Pakistan's Federally Administered Tribal Areas. He said that as president he would not miss a similar opportunity, even without the support of the Pakistani government.[146]

In a December 2005, Washington Post opinion column, and at the Save Darfur rally in April 2006, Obama called for more assertive action to oppose genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan.[147] He has divested $180,000 in personal holdings of Sudan-related stock, and has urged divestment from companies doing business in Iran.[148] In the July–August 2007 issue of Foreign Affairs, Obama called for an outward looking post-Iraq War foreign policy and the renewal of American military, diplomatic, and moral leadership in the world. Saying that "we can neither retreat from the world nor try to bully it into submission," he called on Americans to "lead the world, by deed and by example."[149]

The Flag That's Yours And Mine 1909 The Liberty Song 1768 Music by: William Boyce Lyrics by: John Dickinson Cover artist: none Sources disagree on what may have been America's first patriotic song. The authoritative New Grove Dictionary of American Music credits this song as the first true American patriotic song. Music by: Henry A. Stone Lyrics by: Stone National Emblem March 1907 Music by: E.E. Bagley Lyrics by: None, piano solo Perhaps the most prolific and most memorable patriotic works are the many marches that were penned by great American composers over the course of our history. It is the marches that are played at parades, festivals, military expositions and fireworks celebrations on Independence Day. Of course, the king of American marches was John Phillip Sousa and his famous Stars And Stripes Forever (MIDI) is perhaps the most famous march of them all. Regardless of Sousa's fame, there were hundreds of other grand marches composed by fine composers and among them is E.E. Bagley's National Emblem. This march is easily the equal of Stars and Stripes and is also one of the most popular and often played marches from our early musical heritage. A stirring and musically enjoyable work, this march certainly deserves a place in the American patriotic musical hall of fame. It has been said that "National Emblem is one of America’s most 'perfect' marches, causing the false impression that it was written by Sousa." Legendary brass band and orchestral conductor Frederick Fennell said of this piece, “It is a march for marching; sit-down performances of it should continue to march, for that is its heritage – music for the feet, not the head – and it is unmistakably music for the spirit! Edwin Eugene Bagley (1857 - 1922) Was one of Americas most eminent bandmasters and composer of marches. His most famous march is the National Emblem however many of his marches are still quite popular today and are frequently played at military ceremonies. The tune to the National Emblem was used in a novelty song, And The Monkey Wrapped His Tail Around The Flagpole. Bagley began his music career at the age of nine as a vocalist and comedian with Leavitt’s Bellringers, a company of entertainers that toured many of the larger cities of the United States. He began playing the cornet, traveling for six years with the Swiss Bellringers, after which time he joined Blaisdell’s Orchestra of Concord, New Hampshire. In 1880, he came to Boston as a solo cornetist at the Park Theater. For nine years, he traveled with the Bostonians, an opera company. While with this company, he changed from cornet to trombone. He performed with the Germania Band of Boston and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. By this time he had already composed many marches, including Front Section, The Imperial, The Ambassador, and America Victorious. Bagley never took a lesson on any musical instrument. He was also a fine artist who could have made a name for himself as a caricaturist. http://parlorsongs.com/issues/2006-7/thismonth/feature.php http://parlorsongs.com/issues/2002-7/thismonth/feature.php

Speaking of the spirit of America! In his very last composition, E. T. Paull chose to honor America and our origins with this terrific march with an equally terrific cover. Through over 230 years the spirit of America has stayed strong and though subject to criticism, we are still the bastion of freedom and democracy for the world. No other flag has been so honored (and reviled by some) and held high as a symbol of peace and hope. May she continue to wave and carry the message of freedom forever. Happy birthday America!

Subhas Chandra Bose (Bengali: born January 23, 1897; presumed to have died August 18, 1945 although this is disputed), popularly known as Netaji (literally "Respected Leader"), is one of the most respected politicians of modern India. He was a devout Hindu and spent much time in meditation.[2] He was strongly influenced by Swami Vivekananda's teachings and was known for his patriotic zeal as a student. He established a separate political party, the All India Forward Bloc and continued to call for the full and immediate independence of India from British rule. He was imprisoned by the British authorities eleven times.

The Forward Bloc of the Indian National Congress was formed on 3 May 1939 by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, who had resigned from the presidency of the Indian National Congress on April 29 after being outmaneuvered by Gandhi. The formation of the Forward Bloc was announced to the public at a rally in Calcutta. In August the same year Bose began publishing a newspaper titled Forward Bloc. He travelled around the country, rallying support for his new political project. Bose advocated complete freedom for India at the earliest, whereas the Congress Committee wanted it in phases, through a Dominion status. Other younger leaders including Jawaharlal Nehru supported Bose and finally at the historic Lahore Congress convention, the Congress had to adopt Poorna Swaraj (complete freedom) as its motto. Bhagat Singh's martyrdom and the inability of the Congress leaders to save his life infuriated Bose and he started a movement opposing the Gandhi-Irwin Peace Pact. He was imprisoned and expelled from India. But defying the ban, he came back to India and was imprisoned again. He was imprisoned by the British authorities eleven times. The Justice Mukherjee Commission of Inquiry submitted its report to the Indian Government on November 8, 2005. The report was tabled in Parliament on May 17, 2006. The probe said in its report that Bose did not die in the plane crash and the ashes at the Renkoji Temple are not his. However, the Indian Government rejected the findings of the Commission. Mysterious Monk

Main article: Bhagwanji

Several people believed that the Hindu sanyasi named Bhagwanji, who lived in Faizabad, near Ayodhya and died in 1985, was Subhas Chandra Bose in exile. There had been at least four known occasions when Bhagwanji said he was Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.[9] The belongings of the sanyasi were taken into custody after his death, following a court order in this regard. These were later subjected to the inspection by the Justice Mukherjee Commission of Inquiry. The commission refuted this belief, in the absence of any 'clinching evidence'.[10] The independent probe done by the Hindustan Times into this case had provided hints that the monk was Bose himself.[11] The life and works of Bhagwanji remain a mystery even today.

Post-war reorganization

At the end of the Second World War, the Forward Bloc was reorganized. In February 1946 R.S. Ruiker organised an All India Active Workers Conference at Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. The conference declared the formation of the 'FB Workers Assembly', in practice the legal cover of the still illegal Forward Bloc. Notably some leading communists from Bombay, like K.N. Joglekar and Soli Batliwalli, joined the 'FB Workers Assembly'. The Workers Assembly conference declared that the "Forward Bloc is a Socialist Party, accepting the theory of class struggle in its fullest implications and a programme of revolutionary mass action for the attainment of Socialism leading to a Classless Society."[7]

Denver (pronounced /ˈdɛnvɚ/) is the capital and the most populous city of Colorado, in the United States. Denver is a consolidated city-county located in the South Platte River Valley on the High Plains just east of the Front Range of the Southern Rocky Mountains. The Denver downtown district is located immediately east of the confluence of Cherry Creek with the South Platte River, approximately 15 miles (24 km) east of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Denver is nicknamed the Mile-High City because its official elevation is exactly one mile, or 5,280 feet (1,609 m) above sea level.[2] The 105th meridian west of Greenwich passes through Union Station, making it the reference point for the Mountain Time Zone. The United States Census Bureau estimates that the population of the City and County of Denver was 588,349 on July 1, 2007, making it the 26th most populous U.S. city. It is also the second largest city in the Mountain West after Phoenix. The city has the 10th largest central business district in the United States.[8]The Colorado Territory was created on February 28, 1861,[11] Arapahoe County was formed on November 1, 1861,[11] and Denver City was incorporated on November 7, 1861.[3] Denver City served as the Arapahoe County Seat from 1861 until consolidation in 1902.[The city also welcomes visitors from around the world when it hosts the annual Great American Beer Festival each fall.Hal Turner has obtained one of the new Amero coins. It came from an insider at the USA Treasury. The new currency is being produced at The United States Mint at Denver, Colorado. The Amero will replace the USA dollar as part of the NESARA global prosperity reforms shortly to be announced. The new currency will become legal tender throughout the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Obama sponsored legislation that would have required nuclear plant owners to notify state and local authorities of radioactive leaks, but the bill failed to pass in the full Senate after being heavily modified in committee.[81] Obama is not hostile to Tort reform and voted for the Class Action Fairness Act of 2005 and the FISA Amendments Act of 2008 which grants immunity from civil liability to telecommunications companies complicit with NSA warrantless wiretapping operations.[82]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esther_Vilenska

Esther Vilenska (Hebrew: אסתר וילנסקה‎, born born 8 June 1918, died 8 November 1975) was an Israeli communist politician, journalist and author.

Biography

Born in Poland, Vilenska was active in Hashomer Hatzair in Vilnius, the city in which she attended high school, before emigrating to Mandate Palestine in 1938. She attended the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, gaining a BA in sociology and an MA in History.

Vilenska joined the Palestine Communist Party in 1940, and in 1943 was appointed editor of the newspaper Kol Ha'am (lit. Voice of the People), becoming chief editor in 1947. In 1944 she was elected to the House of Representatives.

She joined the politbureau of Maki when it was formed upon Israeli independence in 1948, and in 1949 became a member of executive committee of the Histadrut, a role she served in until 1973. Also in 1949 she was elected onto Tel Aviv's city council.

She was elected to the Knesset in 1951, stepping down from Tel Aviv city council, serving until 1959, and then again from 1961 until 1965. Her tenure in the Knesset was marked by outspoken opposition to the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories, vigorous defense of civil liberties and a desire to improve economic and social conditions for women.

In 1973 she left Maki and founded a new party, Aki (Hebrew: אק"י‎, an acronym for Opozitzia Komunistit Yisraelit (Hebrew: אופוזיציה קומוניסטית ישראלית‎), lit. Israeli Communist Opposition), serving as editor of its monthly paper.

In addition to her political work, Vilenska was also a widely published writer. She was a regular contributor to leftist publications around the world, including the Saturday Morning Freiheit, a Yiddish language weekly published in New York. Vilenska's articles focused on identifying trends within the Israeli left and finding solutions to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but often delved into cultural and international issues, such as the jailing of the African-American communist activist Angela Davis. Vilenska published numerous pamphlets and several books in Hebrew, Russian, Yiddish and English. Vilenska's labor history, Confrontation and Unity within the Labor Movement (1889-1923), was published posthumously in 1976.

Vilenska met and married fellow Maki leader, Meir Vilner in the 1940s. Vilenska later married Zvi Breidstein, editor of the Maki newspaper Kol Ha'am (Voice of the People). Vilenska and Breidstein lived in the Kiryat Shalom section of Tel Aviv and had two children. They were married until Vilenska's death in 1975.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uttam_Kumar

Uttam Kumar (Bangla: উত্তম কুমার ) (3 September 1926 - 24 July 1980) born as Arun Kumar Chatterjee; was a legendary Bengali actor. He is fondly called the Mahanayak or the "Great Hero" of Bengali cinema. He was born Arun Kumar Chatterjee on 3 September 1926 in Kolkata.

Death of a legend

A strict workaholic, he was rumored to have said that his preferred demise would be on the floor of a studio, doing what he loved best, acting. Indeed, that is exactly how he died. While filming the Bengali film Ogo Bodhu Shundori in 1980, he died of a massive heart attack at the age of 54.

Uttam Kumar's funeral -- mourned by hundreds of thousands of Bengalis spilling into the streets as a slow-moving procession with his garlanded body moved along the major arteries of Calcutta -- was an elaborate, yet ultimately a simple affair. With his passing, Bengal marked the end of an era as Tollygunge (the area in Calcutta where most of the film studios are located) slowly but inexorably transformed itself into Tollywood (marked by a slavish imitation of Bollywood).
Uttam Kumar

As for actors -- to date, and arguably, there has appeared in Tollywood no adequate replacement with comparable star power, box office magnetism, as well as acting acumen. Some of his films like "NishiPadmo" were copied into Bollywood blockbusters like Amar Prem starring Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore. Awards and Achievements:

In 1966, he turned in a much-lauded performance in the Satyajit Ray directed film Nayak. When the Indian Government instituted the National Awards for Best Actor and Actress in 1967, Uttam Kumar was the first ever recipient of the Best Actor Award for his performances in Chiriakhana directed by Satyajit Ray, and Antony Firingi (1967).

Construction

In 630, long before the Dome of the Rock was erected, `Umar ibn al-Khattāb helped by Kaab al-Ahbar and other Muslims recovered the Rock and dug it out of the dust and cleansed the area which had been abandoned for hundreds of years since the Roman destruction. Ibn Asakir[5] mentions that Umar never built any Muslim house of worship on that spot but rather chose to erect a mosque in the southern area of the Haram es Sharif with the Rock behind to the north. He did this to make clear that the qibla of prayer was south, towards the Kaabah in Mecca and that Muslims never dispute the correct direction of prayer, resulting in them possibly praying towards the Rock, as the Jews were doing. The Rock area remained uncovered until the time of Caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan who started construction in 685, completing it in 691. The Muslim scholar al-Wasiti reports this incidence:

“ When Abd al-Malik intended to construct the Dome of the Rock, he came from Damascus to Jerusalem. He wrote, "Abd al-Malik intends to build a dome (qubba) over the Rock to house the Muslims from cold and heat, and to construct the masjid. But before he starts he wants to know his subjects' opinion." With their approval, the deputies wrote back, "May Allah permit the completion of this enterprise, and may He count the building of the dome and the masjid a good deed for Abd al-Malik and his predecessors." He then gathered craftsmen from all his dominions and asked them to provide him with the description and form of the planned dome before he engaged in its construction. So, it was marked for him in the sahn of the masjid. He then ordered the building of the treasury (bayt al-mal) to the east of the Rock, which is on the edge of the Rock, and filled it with money. He then appointed Raja' ibn Hayweh and Yazid ibn Salam to supervise the construction and ordered them to spend generously on its construction. He then returned to Damascus. When the two men satisfactorily completed the house, they wrote to Abd al-Malik to inform him that they had completed the construction of the dome and al-Masjid al-Aqsa. They said to him "There is nothing in the building that leaves room for criticism." They wrote him that a hundred thousand dinars was left from the budget he allocated. He offered the money to them as a reward, but they declined, indicating that they had already been generously compensated. Abd al-Malik orders the gold coins to be melted and cast on the Dome's exterior, which at the time had a strong glitter that no eye could look straight at it. ”

—Abu-Bakr al-Wasiti, Fada'il Bayt al-Maqdis, pp. 80-81, vol 136.[6]

The two engineers Yazid ibn Salam, a Jerusalemite, and Raja' ibn Hayweh, from Baysan, were ordered to spend generously on the construction. In his Book of the Geography, al-Maqdisi reported that seven times the revenue of Egypt was used to build the Dome. During a discussion with his uncle on why the Caliph spent lavishly on building the mosques in Jerusalem and Damascus, al-Maqdisi writes:
Cross section of the edifice
Cross section of the edifice
“ O my little son, thou has no understanding. Verily he was right, and he was prompted to a worthy work. For he beheld Syria to be a country that had long been occupied by the Christians, and he noted there are beautiful churches still belonging to them, so enchantingly fair, and so renowned for their splendour, as are the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the churches of Lydda and Edessa. So he sought to build for the Muslims a mosque that should be unique and a wonder to the world. And in like manner is it not evident that Caliph Abd al-Malik, seeing the greatness of the martyrium of the Holy Sepulchre and its magnificence was moved lest it should dazzle the minds of Muslims and hence erected above the Rock the dome which is now seen there. ”

—Shams al-Din al-Maqdisi, Ahsan al-Taqasim fi Mar'rifat al-Aqalim, 2nd ed. (Leiden, 1967) pp. 159-171.

Mr A.C. Cresswell in his book Origin of the plan of the Dome of the Rock writes that those who built the mosque made use of the measurements of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The diameter of the dome of the mosque is 20m 20cm and its height 20m 48cm, while the diameter of the dome of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is 20m 90cm and its’ height 21m 5cm.

In his study The Historication background of the erection of the Dome of the Rock, Prof. Shlomo Dov Goitein of the Hebrew University mentions:
“ In a well-known passage of his Book of Geography,[7] al-Maqdisi tells us how his uncle excused Abd al-Malik and Al-Walid I for spending so much good Muslims money on buildings: They intended to remove the fitna, the 'annoyance,' constituted by the existence of the many fine buildings of worship of other religions. The very form of a rotunda, given to the Qubbat as-Sakhra, although it was foreign to Islam, was destined to rival the many Christians domes. The inscriptions decorating the interior clearly display a spirit of polemic against Christianity, while stressing at the same time the Koranic doctrine that Jesus Christ was a true prophet. The formula la sharika lahu 'God has no companion' is repeated five times, the verses from sura Maryam 16:34-37, which strongly deny Jesus' sonship to God, are quoted together with the remarkable prayer:

Allahumma salli (with ya; read salli without ya) ala rasulika wa'abdika 'Isa bin Maryam - "In the name of the One God (Allah) Pray for your Prophet and Servant Jesus son of Mary".

All this shows that rivalry with Christendom, together with the spirit of Islamic mission to the Christians, was at the work at the creation of the famous Dome.

—Shlomo Dov Goitein, The Historication background of the erection of the Dome of the Rock, Journal of American Oriental Society, Vol. 70, No. 2, 1950.

The Dome is in the shape of a Byzantine martyrium, a structure intended for the housing and veneration of saintly relics and is an excellent example of middle Byzantine art. Haj Amin Al-Husseini, appointed Grand Mufti by the British, along with Yacoub Al Ghussein implemented restoration of Dome of the Rock and Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. He had the Dome gold-plated for the first time.[citation needed]

Essentially unchanged for more than thirteen centuries, the octagonally-shaped Dome of the Rock remains one of the world's most enduring architectural treasures. The gold-plated dome stretches 20 metres across the Noble Rock, rising to an apex more than 35 metres above it. The facade is made of porcelain[8] The Koranic sura, or chapter,[9] is inscribed across the top in the tile work commissioned in the 16th century by Suleiman the Magnificent. The sura al-Isra (The Night Journey), is inscribed above Ya-Seen.

During his travels in Jerusalem, Mark Twain wrote that parts of the Dome of the Rock used stones excavated from the Temple Mount and which were a part of the Jewish Temple that was destroyed by the Romans in 70CE:
“ Every where about the Mosque of Omar are portions of pillars, curiously wrought altars, and fragments of elegantly carved marble - precious remains of Solomon's Temple. These have been dug from all depths in the soil and rubbish of Mount Moriah, and the Moslems have always shown a disposition to preserve them with the utmost care. ”

"The PLO was considered "the richest of all terrorist organizations" with $8-$10 billion in assets and an annual income of $1.5-$2 billion from "donations, extortion, payoffs, illegal arms dealing, drug trafficking, money laundering, fraud, etc.", according to a 1993 National Criminal Intelligence Service report. Speaking at the inauguration of ISKCON's cultural center in New Delhi on 5th April on occasion of Ramnavmi in 1998, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, then India's prime minister, said:
“ If the Bhagavad Gita, the holy text of the Hindu traditions, is printed in millions of copies and scores of languages and distributed in all nooks and corners of the world, the credit for this great sacred service goes chiefly to ISKCON. For this accomplishment alone, Indians should be eternally grateful to the devoted spiritual army of Swami Prabhupada, the founder of the Hare Krishna movement, and to his followers. . .

The arrival of Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada in the United States in 1965 and the particular popularity his movement gained in a very short span of twelve years must be regarded as one of the greatest spiritual events of the century.

Yamadwitheya

Yamadwitheya is another popular name for the festival of Bhaidooj which celebrates the beauty of the eternal bond of love and affection between a brother and a sister. Yamadwitheya is celebrated on the last day of the five-day-long Diwali celebrations. This is the second day after Diwali and the next day after new moon night. Dhanatrayodashi, Narakchaturdashi, Amavasya (Laxmi Pujan), Balipratipada and Yamadvitiya also called Bhaubeej are the five days which comprise Diwali, and each day has a peculiar religious significance.

Yamadwitheya Legend
Popular legend of Yamadwitheya narrates the tale of Yamaraj, the Hindu mythological god of Death. Infact, Yamadwitheya gets its name from the legend of god Yama Raja himself. Story goes that it was on the auspicious ‘Dwitheya’ or ‘Dooj Day’ (second day after new moon) that Yamaraj met his twin-sister Yami or Yamuna after a long period of separation. Dharam Raj (another name for Yama) received a warm reception from his sister Yami. Yami applied red tilak on his brothers forehead and treated him a sumptuous meal. Yamaraj was so much pleased with his sister’s affectionate welcome that he declared that whosoever receives a teeka from his sister on the day of ‘Dooj’ will not be hurled to hell.

Yamadwitheya Ceremony
In accordance with the legend of Yamaraj and his sister Yami, brothers, till date visit their sister on the ‘Dwithiya Day’ and have a meal with her. The custom is called ‘Bhagini Hastha Bhojanam’, this means ‘Having meal with the sister’. It is customary to worship Lord Yama and his record keeper, Chithragupta on this day. Many people consider it important to take a bath in the river Yamuna on Yamadwitheya.

On the day of Yamadwitheya sisters perform arti of their brothers, apply red teeka on their forehead and give them a sweet to eat. While performing these rituals sisters secretly pray for their brothers long and healthy life. Brothers too bless their sisters and present them with gifts or some cash as a token of love.

Yamadwitheya Celebration
Yamadwitheya is quite a popular festival amongst Hindus in India and is celebrated with lot of gusto and enthusiasm. Brothers and sisters strengthen their relationship by a Yamadwitheya get together and sharing childhood memories of togetherness. Gifts are exchanged as a token of love and best of festive food is relished in a harmonious environment.

Bhai Dooj Festival is celebrated in the month of October or November. The date is not fixed and is calculated every year by the Pandits. It falls on the new moon night, approximately one day after the festival of Diwali. The name Bhai Dooj, with "bhai" meaning brother and "dooj" meaning the second day after the new moon (the day of the festival), literally means the day of the brother. Bhai Dooj is also known as the festival of Tikka. The festival of Bhaiya Duj signifies the bond of love between a brother and a sister. The sister applies tilak (saffron and vermilion) on the forehead of her brother, performs aarti and offers sweets. In return, the brother blesses her and gives her nice presents. These presents form a part of Tikka celebrations in New Delhi, India also.

There are a number of legends associated with the festival of Bhai Dooj. One of the legends has it that Yamraj, the God of death, visited his sister Yamuna on the day of Bhaiya Duj. She adorned his forehead with the auspicious tilak (saffron and vermilion), garlanded him and fed him with special dishes and sweets. At the time of leaving, Yamraj gave her a special gift as a token of his adoration and in return she also gifted him a present that was made by her. On that day Yamraj announced that anyone who receives tilak from his sister would never be thrown into hell. From that day onwards, Bhaiya Dooj is celebrated and is also known by the name of "Yama Dwitiya".

Another legend goes that Lord Krishna went to his sister, Subhadra's house, after annihilating Narakasura demon. She welcomed him with arti (lamp), flowers and sweets. Thereafter, she put the Tikka, holy protective tilak, on his forehead. From that day onwards, the festival of Tikka is celebrated as a mark of affection between brothers and sisters. Following these legends, it has become the tradition that it is the brother who goes to his sister's house to celebrate Bhai Dooj and not the other way around.

AS PER STATE BANK OF INDIA JOURNAL VOLUME 6 NUMBER 4 OF MARCH 2005 UNDER THE CHAIRMANSHIP OF SHRI A.K.PURWAR PUBLISHED FROM STATE BANK ACADEMY , GURGAON QUARTERLY BOTH MONEY LAUNDERERING AND INTERNATIONAL CRIME WERE COVERED UNDER THE HEADS OF:- 4.)"FRAUDS IN INTERNATIONAL TRADE BY V.V.K.BABU AND 10.)MONEY LAUNDERERING:-A BANKER'S PERSPECTIVE.BY VIKAS RANJAN ON PAGE 73 -FACULTY-PHONE NUMBER:-0124-4015129. FURTHER CERTAIN TARGET AREAS HAVE BEEN UNDERLINED SUCH AS EXPORT/IMPORT,HOTELLING AND CASINOS AND VERY SPECIFICALLY REAL ESTATE.
AT THAT TIME THE PRINCIPAL OF THE SBI ACADEMY WAS SHRI D.K.SHUKLA. THE POINT THAT HAS BEEN MISSED OUT IS THAT BANKERS THEMSELVES ARE INVOLVED IN THE SLEAZE BY FINANCING REAL ESTATE AND HAVE THEIR DIRTY MONEY SIPHONED THROUGH COMPANIES LISTED ON THE LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE.THEY ARE NOT AFRAID OF THE LAW ,DOING ANTINATIONAL ACTIVITIES AND INVOLVED IN CRIMES AGAINST WOMEN ESPECIALLY SECOND MARRIAGES AND EXTREME CRUEL TORTURE INFLICTED DUE TO MUSLIM RELIGION AND UNTIMELY DEATH MEDICALLY ,FURTHER CONVERSION TO ARYA SAMAJ BY THE HEINOUS BRITISH ACT OF 1937. THAT IS WHY THE MONEY LAUNDERING ARTICLE ITSELF IS ON PAGE 73 OF THE JOURNAL.THESE CRIMINALS ARE PAYING LAKHS TO POLICE OFFICERS TO STIFLE CASES AGAINST THEM AND IF ANY ACTION IS TAKEN BY AN HONEST POLICEMAN HE IS KILLED.FURTHER THERE IS AN ENTIRE CHAIN OF EATING WHICH CAN BE VERY DANGEROUG IF ONE LAW PERSONNEL DECIDES TO BOOK SUCH A CRIMINAL WHO GOES TO THE POLICE STATION AS A RESPECTABLE BANKER. THE NEED OF THE HOUR IS TO HAVE ALL PERSONS HAVING CBI CASES AGAINST THEM AS REGARDS REAL ESTATE,EXPORT /IMPORT OR HOTELLING SLEAZE-THEIR RECORDS TO BE MAINTAINED IN THE LOCAL POLICE STATION OF RESIDENCE/POSTING OR TEMPORARY RESIDENCE . THEN IT WOULD BE VERY DIFFICULT TO GET SUCH SCAMSTERS OFF THE HOOK IN CASE OF ANY LOCAL FRAUD ,RAPE,WIFE CRUELTY OR ANY OTHER HEINOUS CRIME UNDER THE LOCAL POLICE THANA. MAINTAIN A LIST OF ALL SCAMSTERS IN PUBLIC SECTOR BANKS WITH REAL ESTATE CASES ON THEM IN THE LOCAL POLICE THANA OF POSTING AND RESIDENCE.IS NOT A THEIF CAUGHT AND PUT BEHIND BARS IMMEDIATELY,THEN WHY ARE BANKERS NOT CAUGHT IN THE THANA WHEN THEY ARE CHEATING BOTH THE PUBLIC,THE BANK AND THEIR FAMILIES.THAT IS WHY THEY ARE PROVING THAT THERE IS NO GOD BY THE BACKING OF ORGANIZED CRIME AND FANNY ADAMS UNION JACK WHO ARE MAKING THESE SCAMSTERS DO THE MOST HEINOUS DEEDS DUE TO THEIR OBLIGATION OF CLEANING DIRTY MONEY AS ALSO PROVIDING LOGISTIC TECHNICAL SUPPORT IN A SECOND MARRIAGE OF IVF WITH A WOMAN WHO IS SOMETIMES 24-30 YEARS YOUNGER THAN THESE GUTTERS WHO REFUSE TO BE SATISFIED IN SEX AS THEY GET THEMSELVES INJECTED WITH SEXUAL DRUGS.

Hum (1991)

Bhaktawar (Danny Denzongpa) is a criminal mastermind, and his most active territory is the dockyard. He constantly gets irritated by the dockyard's union leader, Tiger (Amitabh Bachchan), and only tolerates him, because Tiger's dad Deepak Shirke) is his bodyguard. During a confrontation between Tiger and Bhaktawar, Bhaktawar is reportedly killed, and Tiger has to run for his life, this time from the police, even abandoning his love Jumalina Gonsalves (Kimi Katkar). Years later, Tiger surfaces as a bespectacled mild-mannered man, with two younger brothers (Rajnikant & Govinda), one of whom is a police inspector. Soon the past catches up with Tiger (or Shekhar as he calls himself now), and he must now come to terms with it, and avoid being arrested by his brother. Written by rAjOo (gunwanti@hotmail.com)

Mainly a Thriller/Drama about corrupt police officers, crime rings and workers unions, the story of Hum is about a man named Tiger, who works, reluctantly, for the criminal Bhaktawar collecting 'protection money.' However, Tiger also helps the poor and leads protests against Bhaktawar's actions. He loves his family, and he loves his girlfriend Jumma even though their relationship seems to be a stormy one. Bhaktawar decides to bump off Tiger, but accidentally kills his parents instead, leaving Tiger to care for his two little step-brothers alone. The corrupt police inspector, Giridhar, takes advantage of this situation and, intending to steal Bhaktawar's fortune, frames Tiger for killing Bhaktawar's family before himself arresting Bhaktawar, thus ensuring that there will be no one to complain when he takes the money for himself. The story then picks up 15 years later: Tiger has changed his name to Shekhar and lives in the country with his two brothers, who are both adults now and one of whom is even married. Jumma, whom he was forced to leave in order to flee with his brothers, has become a famous actress and is still waiting for Tiger to come back to her. Inspector Giridhar has become rich from Bhaktawar's stolen fortune. And also, Bhaktawar himself has just been released from jail, and he wants revenge on the man he thinks murdered his family -- Tiger. Written by Talia Felix

According to Dr. KK Birla, 'Education is the most important single factor in achieving rapid economic development and technological progress and in creating a social order founded on the values of freedom, social justice and equal opportunity. Programmes of education are the basis of efforts to forge bonds of common citizenship, to harness the energies of the people, and to develop the natural and human resources of every part of the country.

The aim of education is to ensure harmoniously blended development of the students' physical, intellectual, aesthetic, social and spiritual powers and not merely to impart theoretical knowledge and skills.

"There is complete harmony in the family... "

Santanu Sanyal
Jayanta Mallick

Every evening B.K. Birla plays the harmonium and his wife joins him in singing prayers. "My voice has become coarse but her voice still lilts," he says.

At 85, Basant Kumar Birla, the youngest son of G.D. Birla, referred to as BK Babu, was in a hurry, at least till recently. Not without reason, though. The ownership issue with regard to Pilani Investments and Industries Corporation Ltd had to be resolved fast. The death of Priyamvada Birla had changed the scenario.

"Also, we have become old; I'm 85, G.P. Birla is 82 and my elder brother, K.K. Birla, is 87. So something had to be done without delay," says B.K. Birla, sitting in his 15th-floor office at Birla Buildings in Kolkata.

Three months ago, members of the Birla clan met to resolve the Pilani issue. Finally, the agreements were signed on August 5. Interestingly, none of the Birlas put their signatures in the agreement. "I do not remember having signed any paper; our executives did everything."

How much does he, together with Kumarmangalam Birla, now hold in Pilani? "More than 50 per cent," comes the reply. When pressed on the exact figure, he says with a big smile, "Does it really matter as long as we hold more than 50 per cent?" Religious as he is, did he go to the temple after the signing? "We did go to the temple, but before the signing," he says.

Ever since G.D. Birla's death in 1983, there have been several meetings among the family members regarding ownership issues. By 1985, the ownership issues of all companies except Pilani Investments had been satisfactorily resolved.

In 1986, the Pilani issue came up for review. It was decided that B.K. Birla would be the Chairman of Century Textiles, in which Pilani held a 35 per cent stake. The board of Pilani was recast to induct C.K. Birla, representing the G.P. Birla group, and M.P. Birla, each holding 25 per cent stake in Pilani.

It was also decided that the Chairmanship of Century Textiles would automatically pass on to Aditya Vikram Birla, B.K. Birla's son, in due course. Since Aditya Vikram died in 1995, B.K. Birla continues to be Chairman.

After M.P. Birla's death, his shares in Pilani passed on to his wife, Priyamvada Birla. After her death last year, the ownership of the Pilani shares she held has been disputed. "We do not consider the shares held earlier by M.P. Birla as part of the promoter's group," B.K. Birla says.

K.K. Birla's shares in Pilani would automatically come to his younger brother, B.K. Birla. K.K. Birla holds about seven per cent equity — worth about Rs 100 crore — in Pilani. "Right now I do not have that much money and so I've told my elder brother to hold the shares for about a year or so. But he assured me that I need not worry and that he would gift the Pilani shares to me. I'm not going to accept the shares as a gift. I can take a watch or some such thing as a gift but not shares of such a huge value."

Looking relaxed, he adds that the payment has been made to G.P. Birla and S.K. Birla, the cheques have been encashed and the shares transferred.

What about other companies in which different Birla groups jointly hold stakes?

"There are 15 or so such companies but we are in no hurry to settle the ownership issue in these companies. There is no problem as there is complete harmony in the family in this regard, as it was in the case of Pilani."

The bulk of Pilani's investment is in the Kumarmangalam Birla-K.K. Birla group. For instance, in Century alone, Pilani's stake is about 35 per cent. The other group companies in which Pilani holds equity are Mysore Cement, under the S.K. Birla group; Sutlej and Zuari, under the K.K. Birla group; and Orient Paper, under the G.P. Birla group.

Now that the Pilani issue has been resolved satisfactorily, B.K. Birla may have to turn his attention to the succession issue within his own group companies, which are worth about Rs 10,000 crore.

Jayashree Tea, with 15 gardens all over the country, and producing about 20 million kg annually, would go to his elder daughter, Jayashree Mohta, and Kesoram, complete with cement factories and tyre units, to the younger daughter, Manjushree.

"I want to give Century Textiles and Century Enka to my grandson, Kumarmangalam, but he is in no hurry to take them," he says. "There are a few other companies in my group, much smaller in size, which too, I feel, should go to Kumar, but he wants me to look after these companies as long as I can. This is presumably because Kumar is so busy with his own companies. Also these companies were set up long ago, much smaller in size and, therefore, may not be of great interest to Kumar."

Then there are so many trusts controlling educational institutions, art galleries, music halls, and the like. Most of these will perhaps go to the daughters.

"I'm not bothered what happens to these institutions after my death; it is for them to decide how they will be run."

He takes pride in saying that his management style is moulded after his father, G.D. Birla. "I have followed him in toto. Perhaps we are old-fashioned by present-day standards," he says.

His son Aditya, the first in the Birla clan to be educated in a foreign university (MIT in the US), followed his father's style, partially.

However, he is not sure if the grandson too is following the same style of doing business. "It is not expected either. The world has vastly changed, the complexities of business have increased and Kumar has so many things to look after, but I must say he is excellent in his own way."

The core of Birla's management practices has been the "parta" system, which, according to him, is nothing but a cost-control exercise. Also, the loyalty and efficiency of those working under him have been a source of strength. "I've got some of the finest men working for me for 35-40 years with impeccable records and I'm really proud of them."

He concedes that the not-so-satisfactory equations with the powers that were did hurt his business interests from time to time. "But somehow we managed to weather the storm."

Birla and his wife have avid interests in art and culture and, for many years, the Sangit Kala Mandir — set up by them in Kolkata, organised performances by leading artistes.

"It was indeed a pleasure interacting with top artistes at a personal level," he says. The Birla Academy in Kolkata is again an excellent centre for arts.

At a time when many others in his family (including his son) chose to relocate to other parts of the country, Birla opted for Kolkata.

When asked what was so special about Kolkata, he quips, "What is so special about your wife and children to you? It is the same feeling. I'm brought up in this city, my children too were born and brought up here and even my grandson was born here. My family is part of this city."

Birla wakes up at 3.30 every morning, and his wife at 2.30 a.m. "We take a walk at 4 in the morning. My wife walks for about 45 minutes and I, a little longer. I come to office by 9.30."

Does he still play the violin? "No, not any more. I stopped playing the violin many years ago. But I play the harmonium every evening and my wife joins me in singing prayers. My voice has become coarse but her voice still lilts. Occasionally, my younger daughter joins us. Usually, only we two are there and it is a wonderful experience."

Does he have any regrets? "Regrets? No, no, there are no regrets. Why should there be any? God has given me so much and I'm grateful to Him. Despite personal setbacks, which we all have in our lives in one form or another, I've been able to sail through with God's grace. I do not have anything to ask for from Him."

SALINAS, California (CNN) -- Singer and songwriter John Denver, whose '70 hits such as "Rocky Mountain High" and "Take Me Home, Country Roads" gained him worldwide fame, was killed Sunday when his small aircraft plunged into Monterey Bay, officials said Monday. He was 53.

His remains were positively identified by the Monterey County Coroner's Office through fingerprints obtained from the state of Colorado, Monterey County Sheriff Norman Hicks said. The National Transportation Safety Board was pursuing details on the cause of the crash itself, while the sheriff's coroners will be investigating the circumstances surrounding the cause of death, he said.

"We share a sense of shock and loss to our community, our nation and the world, and we extend our heartfelt sympathy to the many friends, the family, and the many admirers of John Denver," Hicks said at a Monday news conference.

Denver was piloting the two-seat light plane along the California coast when the engine failed shortly after 5 p.m., plunging him into ocean waters just past Monterey Bay. In August 1997, "The Best of John Denver Live" reached Number 47 on the country album charts. It was Denver's first chart appearance since 1988.

Beheading of St. John the Baptist

Feast day

The liturgical commemoration of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist is almost as old as that commemorating his Nativity, which is one of the oldest feasts, if not the oldest feast, introduced into both the Eastern and Western liturgies to honor a saint.

The Roman Catholic Church celebrates the feast on August 29 as the "Martyrdom of St. John the Baptist" in the ordinary form and as "The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist" in the extraordinary form, or traditional Latin Mass.

The Church of England and many other national provinces of the Anglican Communion celebrate the feast on August 29. In the Church of England, the day is referred to as "The Beheading of John the Baptist."

The Eastern Orthodox and Byzantine Catholic churches also celebrate this feast on August 29. The day is always observed as a day of fasting, even if it falls on a Saturday or Sunday (in which case the fast is lessened, but never entirely abrogated). In some Orthodox cultures pious people will not eat food from a flat plate, use a knife, or eat food that is round in shape on this day.

The Armenian Apostolic Church celebrates the Decollation of St. John on Saturday of Easter Week.

The Syriac Orthodox, Indian Orthodox, and Syro-Malankara Catholic Churches commemorate the martyrdom on January 7.

Ek Nari Ek Brahmachari (1971)

Raisaheb Surajbhan Chaudhary lives a wealthy lifestyle in a palatial mansion with his wife of 30 years, Rajlaxmi, and two sons, Rajkumar, who has been married for several years with Shyama; and Mohankumar who is studying out of town in college. Surajbhan is disappointed with Rajkumar as he has as yet not produced a heir to his family. To make matters worse Mohan, a devout worshiper of Lord Bajrangbali, has taken a vow of celibacy and refuses to get married. Things change dramatically when a young woman named Neena, along with her son, enters the Chaudhary household claiming that Mohan had married her and abandoned her. She goes through a number of tests, including a blood test, which determine that the child is actually a heir of the Chaudhary family. Now Surajbhan and Rajlaxmi want Mohan and Neena to get officially married, though Mohan keeps on objecting that he has never married Neena and the child is not his. Things get complicated when Surajbhan finds out that the child is actually Rajkumar's, and that Neena may have been pulling wool over all their eyes.

Beyond The Frame: Adivasis of Chhattisgarh

I traveled to central India in October 2004 to photograph the Adivasis (tribals) in Chhattisgarh, a recently established state originally part of Madhya Pradesh. One of the more interesting tribal belts is in the Bastar region, and it is there that I photographed members of the Muria, Muria-Gond, Bison-Horn Maria,Halba, Dhurwa, Bhatra and Dorla tribes. I witnessed their ceremonial dances, and rubbed shoulders with them at their weekly markets, or 'haats', where they barter for products and produce. I sampled their delicacies, including a rather spicy concoction of red-ants. Their ceremonial dances are very similar in style to Native American dances.

This photograph is of two members of the Bison Horn Marias tribe, a major sub-caste of the Gonds, photographed after they had performed one of their ritualistic dances. These tribes prefer to live in isolation in forests, and generally shun the outside world. The majority of Bison Horn Marias speak various unintelligible dialects of Gondi, an unwritten language of the Dravidian family. They practice shifting cultivation method of agriculture and collect forest produce for survival.

Due to the presence of the separatist Naxalites, who attack police stations and government building, it is wise to hire guides that are of the area and knowledgeable of the situation. Chhattisgarh and its Bastar region is not for everyone, however I was impressed by the courage against adversity shown by these tribes, and by their desire to preserve
their identity. For the genuinely interested, this region offers an unparalleled glimpse into the lives of a fast disappearing way of life.

HOW AUTHENTIC ARE THE SUPREME COURT DECISIONS?

Constitutional status of Jainism in India

In 2005 the Supreme Court of India in a judgment stated that Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists are sub-sects or 'special faiths' of Hinduism, and are governed under the ambit of Hindu laws.[46] In the same year however, it declined to issue a writ of Mandamus towards granting Jains the status of a religious minority throughout India. The Court noted that Jains have been declared a minority in 5 states already, and left it to the rest of the States to decide on the minority status of Jain religion.[47]

In 2006 the Supreme Court in a judgment pertaining to a state, opined that "Jain Religion is indisputably not a part of the Hindu Religion". (para 25, Committee of Management Kanya Junior High School Bal Vidya Mandir, Etah, U.P. v. Sachiv, U.P. Basic Shiksha Parishad, Allahabad, U.P. and Ors., Per Dalveer Bhandari J., Civil Appeal No. 9595 of 2003, decided On: 21.08.2006, Supreme Court of India) [2]

A Jain is a follower of Jinas ("conquerors"),[7][8] specially gifted human beings who have rediscovered the dharma, became fully liberated and taught the spiritual path for the benefit of all living beings. Jains follow the teachings of 24 special Jinas who are known as Tirthankaras ('ford-makers', those who have discovered and shown the way to salvation). The 24th and most recent Tirthankar is Shri Mahavir, who lived from 599 to 527 BCE according to traditional history. The 23rd Tirthankar, Shri Parsvanatha, is now recognised as a historical person, who lived during 872 to 772 BC.[9][10]

Jainism encourages spiritual development through reliance on and cultivating one's own personal wisdom and self-control (व्रत, vratae). The goal is realization of the soul's true nature.

Jaina tradition is unanimous in naming Rishabha (also known as Adhinath) as the First Tirthankar.[11] The first Tirthankar, Rishabhdev/ Adhinath appeared prior to the Indus Valley Civilization. The Jain Swastika symbol and naked statues resembling the Jain monks amongst the remains of the Indus Valley Civilization, do substantiate claims.

Jainism believes that the Universe and Dharma have no beginning and no ending. However it goes through a process of cyclical change. Jains believe it is approx. 8.4 million years old religion in its current cyclic period. Therefore there is no concept of a creator of the universe within Jainism.

Jainism differs from other religions in its concept of God. According to its belief, there is no overarching supreme divine creator, owner, preserver or destroyer. Every living soul is potentially divine and the Sidhhas who have completely eliminated their karmic bonding, thereby ending their cycle of birth and death, have attained God-consciousness.

The main Jain prayer (Namokar Mantra) therefore salutes the five special categories of souls that have attained God-consciousness or are on their way to achieving it, so as to emulate and follow their path to salvation.

Jain literature

Jains have contributed to India's classical and popular literature. For example, almost all early Kannada literature and Tamil literature was written by Jains.

  • Some of the oldest known books in Hindi and Gujarati were written by Jain scholars. The first autobiography in Hindi, [Ardha-Kathanaka] was written by a Jain, Banarasidasa, an ardent follower of Acarya Kundakunda who lived in Agra.
  • Several Tamil classics are written by Jains or with Jain beliefs and values as the core subject.
  • Practically all the known texts in the Apabhramsha language are Jain works.

The oldest Jain literature is in Shauraseni and Ardha-Magadhi Prakrit (Agamas, Agama-Tulya, Siddhanta texts, etc). Many classical texts are in Sanskrit (Tatvartha Sutra, Puranas, Kosh, Sravakacara, mathematics, Nighantus etc). "Abhidhana Rajendra Kosha" written by Acharya Rajendrasuri, is only one available Jain encyclopedia or Jain dictionary to understand the Jain Prakrit, Sanskrit, and Ardha-Magadhi and other Jain languages, words, their use and references with in oldest Jain literature. Later Jain literature was written in Apabhramsha (Kahas, rasas, and grammars), Hindi (Chhahadhala, Mokshamarga Prakashaka, and others), Tamil (Jivakacintamani, Kural, and others), and Kannada (Vaddaradhane and various other texts). Jain versions of Ramayana and Mahabharata are found in Sanskrit, Prakrit, Apabhramsha and Kannada.

Jessica Lall Murder Case
SC dismisses bail plea of Manu Sharma

New Delhi, May 12-2008
In a double whammy for Manu Sharma, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in Jessica Lall murder case, the Supreme Court today refused to grant him bail and suspend his punishment.

"Keeping in view the seriousness of offence, the manner in which the crime was said to have been committed and the gravity of offence, we are of the view that no case has been made out by Sharma for suspension of the sentence and grant of bail", a Bench comprising Justices C.K Thakker and D.K Jain said.

"The application deserves to be dismissed and is accordingly dismissed," it said.

The court noted that Sharma's pleas could not be granted, as his appeal against the conviction by the Delhi High Court had been admitted and awaits final hearing that was likely within "measurable distance of time".

The Bench said since the appeal was pending, any observation on the case was likely to prejudice one or the other party, challenging the High Court verdict.

"We are conscious and mindful that the main matter (appeal) is admitted and is pending for final hearing.

Observations on merits, one way or the other, therefore, are likely to prejudice one or the other party to the appeal. We are hence, not entering into the correctness or otherwise of the evidence on record," the bench said.

Model Jessica Lall was shot dead here on the intervening night of April 29-30, 1999, at the Qutub Colonade restaurant in South Delhi owned by socialite Bina Ramani.

Manu Sharma, son of former union minister Venod Sharma, was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by the Delhi High Court, which had set aside the trial court verdict acquitting him in the case.

The Bench said when a person was convicted by an appellate court (high court), he could not be said to be an “innocent person” until the final decision was recorded by the superior court in his favour.

“The mere fact that during the period of trial, the accused was on bail and there was no misuse of liberty, does not warrant suspension of execution of sentence and grant of bail. What really necessary is to consider whether reasons exists to suspend execution of the sentence and grant of bail,” it said.

The Bench said “initial presumption of innocence” was also not in favour of Sharma, who remained on bail for considerable period during the trial of the case as his acquittal by the sessions court was set aside by the high court.

“It, however, cannot be overlooked that as on today, Sharma has been found guilty and convicted by a competent criminal court. Initial presumption of innocence in favour of the accused, therefore, is no more available to the applicant,” the Bench said.

It said: “On the facts and in the circumstances of the case, this is not a fit case to exercise power under Section 389 of the CrPC (for grant of suspension of sentence pending appeal)”. — PTI

CASE NO.:
Appeal (civil) 9595 of 2003

PETITIONER:
Committee of Management Kanya Junior High School Bal Vidya Mandir, Etah, U.P.

RESPONDENT:
Sachiv, U.P. Basic Shiksha Parishad Allahabad, U.P. & Others

DATE OF JUDGMENT: 21/08/2006

BENCH:
S. B. SINHA & DALVEER BHANDARI

JUDGMENT:
J U D G M E N T

This appeal is directed against the judgment and order
dated 10.4.2003 passed by the High Court of Judicature at
Allahabad in Civil Writ Petition No. 15255 of 2003.

Respondent no. 3 Smt. Santosh Upadhyay was working
as an Assistant Teacher in the Kanya Junior High School Bal
Vidya Mandir, Etah. A letter dated 8.9.2001 in the form of a
show-cause-notice was sent to respondent no. 3 by the
Principal of the school directing her to stop her acts of
indiscipline. The letter dated 8.9.2001 reads as under:
"(Minority Institution)
G. Jr. High School Bal Vidya Mandir, Etah
(Permanently Recognized from Government for the
Class from Nursery to VIIIth)"

It may be pertinent to mention that a letter dated
7.3.2003 sent by the District Inspector of School, Etah to the
Basic Eduction Officer, Etah regarding verification of the Girls
Junior High School Bal Vidya Mandir, Etah Minority
Institution is as under:

"From,
District Inspector of School, Etah.

To,
To Basic Education Officer, Etah.

Letter No. /2002-03 Dated 7.3.2003

Sub: In regard to verification of Girls
Junior High School Bal Vidya
Mandir, Etah Minority Institution.

Sir,

In the above matter kindly peruse your
office letter B.S. 7493/2002-03 dated
24.2.2003.

In the regard by this office 2.9.2002, the
position is made clear, where as the then
District Inspector of School, Etah in
accordance with the then Rules was competent
authority to declare the aforementioned School
as Minority Institution or not? It is informed
in this regard, as per para 3 under heading
"Minority Institution" of Madhyan 10, photo
copy of the same is enclosed the then District

Inspector of School was Competent Authority
to decide the Minority Institution.

Please be aware accordingly and take
necessary action.

Sd/-
7.3.2003
(K. N. Kanaujiya)
District Inspector of School, Etah.

Enclosed: As above."

According to the appellant institution, it is clearly
mentioned that the District Basic Education Officer was
competent to decide regarding minority status of the
institution. The Division Bench of the Allahabad High Court
in Special Appeal 1207/2001, after hearing the parties,
observed as under:
"The institution has been accorded the status of a
minority institution thus no prior approval of the
District Basic Education Officer for terminating the
services of a teacher in a minority institution is
required to be taken in view of the proviso to Rule
15 of the 1978 Rules."

The appeal filed by respondent no. 3 was dismissed by an
order dated 13.11.2002.

In subsequent proceedings in Writ Petition No. 1525 of

2003, the learned Single Judge of the Allahabad High Court on
10.4.03, while altogether ignoring the said judgment of the
Division Bench of the same Court in the Special Appeal No.
1207 of 2001, (by which he was bound), had observed in the
judgment that in a Special Appeal the Court had not
considered the question regarding the minority status of the
institution. This observation of the learned Single Judge is
wholly untenable.

The approach adopted by the learned Single Judge in this
case is against the settled principle of law. Law is consistent
and clear that the Single Judge of the High Court is bound by
the decision of the Division Bench.

In support of the view taken by the Division Bench adequate material exists. We deem it proper to recapitulate references to the decided cases and other relevant material.
The Government of Madhya Pradesh, by a notification
dated 29.5.2001, declared the Jain community in the State of
Madhya Pradesh as a minority community.
The Founding Fathers of the Constitution had unequivocally recognized the Jains as a minority community as is evident from the proceedings of the Constituent Assembly. While keeping in view that the Jains are a minority community, a representative of the Jain community was taken in the Minority Advisory Committee of the Constituent Assembly. On 3rd September, 1949, while addressing a public meeting at Allahabad, the first Prime Minister of India, Shri Jawahar Lal Nehru said. We quote a few lines from the said speech "No doubt India has a vast majority of Hindus, but they could not forget the fact that there were also minorities Muslims, Parsis, Christians, Sikhs and Jains. If India was understood as a Hindu Rashtra, it meant that the minorities were not cent percent citizens of this country." The said speech was reported in the English daily newspaper 'The Statesman' dated 5.9.1949. On 31st January, 1950, the PPS to the then Prime Minister of India sent a letter to the Jain Deputation on behalf of the then Prime Minister, which reads as under: "With reference to the deputation of certain representatives of the Jains, who met the Prime Minister on the 25th January, 1950, I am desired to say that there is no cause whatever for the Jains to have any apprehensions regarding the future of their religion and community. Your deputation drew attention to Article 25, explanation II of the Constitution. This explanation only lays down a rule of construction for the limited purpose of the provision in the article and as you will notice, it mentions not only of Jains but also Buddhists and the Sikhs. It is clear therefore, there is no reason for thinking that Jains are considered as Hindus. It is true that Jains in some ways closely linked to Hindus and have many customs in common, but there can be no doubt that they are a distinct religious community and constitution does not in any way affect this well recognized position. Yours faithfully, Sd. A. V. Pai Principal Private Secretary to the Prime Minister" Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the former President of India, in his celebrated book "Indian Philosophy Vol I" mentioned as under:

"The Bhagawat Purana endorses the view that Rishbhadeva was the founder of Jainism. There is evidence to show that so far back as the first century B.C. there were people who were worshipping Rishabhadeva, the first Tirthankara. There is no doubt that Jainism prevailed even before Vardhamana Mahaveera or Parsvanatha. The Yajurveda mentions the names of three Tirthankaras-Rishab, Ajitnath & Aristanemi."
Dr. Radhakrishnan, who edited the 6th Volume of The
Cultural Heritage of India, mentioned as under:
"The Jains claim a great antiquity for their religion.
Their earliest prophet was Rishabhdeva. Who is
mentioned even in the Vishnu and Bhagawat
Puranas as belonging to a very remote past. In the
earliest Brahmanic literature are found traces of the
existence of a religious Order, which ranged itself
strongly against the authority of the Vedas and the
institution of animal sacrifice. According to the
Jain tradition, at the time of the Mahabharata war,
this Order was led by Neminatha, who is said to
have belonged to the same Yadava family as Krisna
and who is recognized as the twenty-second
Tirthankara. The Order gathered particular
strength during the eighth century B.C. under
Parsvanatha the twenty-third Tirthankaran, who
was born at Varanasi. This order we may call the
sramana sangha (as distinct from the Vedic Order),
which later became divided into the Jain and the
Buddhist Orders under Mahaveera and the Buddha,
respectively."

SYMBOLISM OF SIGMA

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sigma_(letter)

Sigma (upper case Σ, lower case σ; Greek Σιγμα, lower case in word-final position ς) is the eighteenth letter of the Greek alphabet, and carries the /s/ sound. In the system of Greek numerals it has a value of 200. When used at the end of a word, and the word is not all upper case, the final form (ς) is used. (e.g. Ὀδυσσεύς (Odysseus) - Note the two sigmas in the center of the name, and the word-final sigma at the end.) Not to be confused with the cedilla ç.

The letter is ultimately derived from Phoenician Šin . However, its name derives from Samekh.

The uppercase form of sigma was borrowed into the Latin alphabet to serve as the uppercase of esh (lowercase: ʃ).

Disigma, or "double sigma", is a non-current term for the character Sampi. [1]
